What is an E collar and how does it work?
The e collar system works as a stimulation training aid to help alert your pup that there is a command to follow. Much like the Pavlov’s Bell response, learned from psychology, your pup will learn the commands based on: voice & hand commands paired with stimulation (if needed). Based on our beliefs & methods, a clear communication of the command, in above sequence, must always be present and consistent for your pup to understand. The e collar paired with our training methods make for a positive, humane and long lasting bond for you and your pup. Keep in mind that each dog is different, thus we tailor our training to the needs of each dog.
Will the E collar hurt my dog?
Have NO fear – the e-collar system is NOT a punishment, a “shock” collar, abusive, nor is it in-humane. However, in full disclosure, ANY training device such as : flat collars, leashes, pinch or choke chain collars, pitch tone collars, ect. Used inappropriately, ill-fitting, and not by a professional, can be in- humane and cause harm to your fur baby! Let our PIM professionals help you to understand the e collar and see the amazing results that will occur with our training. The true testament for your pup is the excitement that they should have when you bring the E collar out. They should relate this to freedom, fun, exercise, training practice, & bonding. Dog’s love to have a “job”. Most of the time that relates to working for their owner and having that special bonding time!
Learning together:
Here at PIM – We will educate owners on the proper use & fit of the e collar, our concepts & our methods used while training your pup! One of the first steps in success is for owners to fully understand the E collar and what it feels like on your pup! In my experience, once owners are fully educated and feel the E collar stimulation for themselves, they are relieved knowing that this unit won’t “shock” or hurt their pup. We will teach you everything needed to continue a successful transition back to your home and to flourish in companionship and communication.
How long will my dog have to wear the E collar?
Your dog will not wear the e-collar 24-7. We will tailor training for each pup & will devise a training program for you to continue at home. You will find once you establish training and a solid transition back home, your pup will need the e collar less and less inside of your home. However, we always recommend putting the e-collar on your dog before you take them out for adventures or off- leash.
In my opinion safety and protection of my fur-babies is most important, and having the e collar on my dogs aids in their safety. We can’t always control distractions or dangers in public, but we can be PROactive handlers and have well trained pups!
I will always have 2 things on my dogs when in public, hiking, neighborhood walking, beach or anywhere off my property:
Can I visit my dog while in training?
Generally we do not allow owners to come and visit their dog while in training. We find that it actually disrupts the training and bonding that is being built between our trainers and your pup. However, you will receive daily updates of your pup containing pictures and/or videos. So, you will be able to see that they are having a blast, well loved, and having top notch care!
Can I meet with the trainer & see where my dog will be staying?
Absolutely, and we encourage this! We want you at ease knowing you fur-baby is in a good, healthy and well loved environment! This will need an appointment set up. Pls. Call 707-291-0392 for a tour and discussion.
What should I buy for my dog before he/she comes home from training?
I encourage owners to purchase a couple of “must haves” :
Depending on the breed of your pup, I will suggest a few things along the way that I think your pup may benefit from when they return home.
What vaccinations do you require for my dog?
We require that all dogs be current on their rabies, DHPP and bordetella vaccines. Vaccines must be current at least two weeks prior to boarding. (Bordetella is not always given as part of your pet's routine vaccine protocol. Please check with your vet to make sure your pet has had this vaccine.)
Why do you require the vaccines 3 weeks prior to boarding?
We require the vaccines to be given 3 weeks prior to boarding. Just as human vaccines, some people will have a reaction to the flu vaccine and develop mild flu like symptoms, some dogs may develop canine cough-type symptoms from the bordetella or fatigue from the other vaccines. If your dog is going to develop those symptoms they will usually show up in 7-14 days. We want your fur-baby feeling their best for their fun stay-cation ahead!
